Lyme disease is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the country and one of the most difficult to diagnose. I would never thought a label of Lyme Disease would be smacked on my forehead – and when it was, I didn’t really understand the reality. This epidemic is a growing threat that cannot be overlooked.
There is no magic bullet or quick fix for Lyme disease. Treatment protocols that work for one patient may not work for another. It’s trial and error to figure out what will destroy the grip of Lyme and flush it out of your body.
I spent over two hours in my doctor’s office today giving more blood for evaluation and discussing treatment options. A few changes have already been implemented in my treatment plan. We are also considering a visit to a specialist in Florida. Lyme patients are forced to advocate for themselves and find educated doctors who are willing and able to help. The costs add up quickly as insurance companies rarely pick up the tab on treatment. Many Lyme patients are faced with decisions such as choosing bankruptcy or to not treat and slowly allow their minds and bodies to deteriorate. Doctors need to be educated on the complexity of Lyme Disease, trained to identify or test for it, and also in providing treatment protocols for patients.
One day at a time, I will keep fighting. I will keep being a voice for those struggling with this illness and are unable to put into words the harsh reality they are faced with. Keep fighting, Lyme Warriors. #GodsgotUS
